Blog assignment 2

I am interning at Memorial School in Union Beach. The school serves students from preschool through 8th grade and includes mainstream students, students with special needs, and students that need resource classrooms for extra help. Memorial school is located in a one square mile town, which happens to be a tight nit community.

I chose this site because I wanted to gain experience in a school setting. All of my volunteer hours were in a pediatric setting in a hospital working mainly with pediatric oncology patients. I wanted to gain experience with children in a different environment. Also, I chose a school setting because I am trying to decide if I would like to pursue getting my teaching certification or working with a child study team post graduation. I think that interning in a school setting will help me fully decide what I really want to do with my life.

After starting my internship, I can say that a strong area at my site is that they are extremely organized and have very good communication. All of the teachers communicate with the child study team and vice verse. Also, my site supervisor is very good! she encourages me to ask questions and learn and wants to help me achieve my goals. I do not really know of any areas in which the site is lacking. Funding sources for this site are state, federal and local funding.

I do not believe there is opportunity for full time work after graduation. The child study team is fully staffed as of right now, but you never know what may become available.

Blog Assignment 1

1) Please tell us about yourself. For example what is the funniest thing that ever happened to you or what about your makes you interesting?
Hi. I'm Megan and I am 23 years old. I have been in college for a little over 5 years and am FINALLY finishing. I still live at home and am hoping to find a full time career after I finish this semester which will allow me to save and move out. Currently I live with my mom, her boyfriend, and my brother. My dad is remarried with 3 step daughters so I am now the oldest of  5 (I guess that is somewhat interesting). I love children and have a passion for helping others.

2) Please tell us your concentration. Why did you choose this concentration?

My concentration is Family Services. I actually switched to this concentration this past summer. I switched out of Child Life after not finding an internship in a hospital under a CCLS. I am happy that I switched because my options and choices in a career are much more broad now.

3) What is the name of your internship site and is your position?

I am interning at Memorial School in Union Beach. Its a small school in Monmouth County. I am interning with the school psychologist. I am pretty excited about this being all of my fieldwork has been in a hospital setting. This is something new. I will be attending IEP meetings as well as staff meetings. I will also be interacting with students who have behavioral issues and students with different levels or learning disabilities and developmental delays.

4) What are your current career or graduate school plans? Or tell us if you plan to marry rich or travel the world!

I am hoping to find a career after I graduate this semester. I am hoping to find something within a school setting as part of the child study team or working for CPC behavioral centers or maybe even DYFS. I am honestly hoping to find something that will always be a new challenge everyday. I am also trying to decide if I want to pursue my teacher certification and possible get my masters degree in education and become special ed certified.

5) Also, tell us about your family - for example - are your parents married or not, do you live with them, do you have siblings, pets etc? What is an activity you like to share with your family? etc.

My parents are not married. I live with my mom, her long time boyfriend, my brother, and my dog and cat. My dad remarried a few years ago and now has 3 step daughters (my new sisters). I have a close relationship with everyone in my family; especially my mom and my grandparents who happen to live down the street from me.  One activity I share with my mom is taking pictures. We both love to take pictures of nature.

6) Please also write about 1 or 2 topics on the syllabus that interest you and WHY.

One topic that interests me in the syllabus is the job interview paper. I think is interesting because it helps us potentially set up a career/job after we graduate, maybe even before hand depending on the place. I also am interested in learning more about resume writing. I feel that my resume is pretty good as I have been to career services, but it never hurts to learn new ways to make your resume stand out!

7) Last tell me what you think about wikis - or what you learned from the video.
Wikis are something that are definitely  new to me, but they seem simple to use. They will just take some practice and getting used to just like any other form of technology. The video helped stick in my head the "EDIT' and "SAVE' buttons, and how important they are.
